Understanding Self-Directed Learning Online
Prior to reading this article my initial thought was, “How complex can self directed learning really be?” I thought, of course, you have to be motivated and organized but that essentially was the extent of self-directed learning in my mind. However as I began to read the article my knowledge and opinions of self-directed learning changed. First I began to understand that there is a wide range in levels of self-direction according to the learning conditions that one encounters. For this reason learners may show a greater level of self-direction when it is something that is of interest to them or that they have had previous experience with. As I progressed through the article it became clear to me that the concept of self-directed learning is an intricate web of context, personal attributes, motivation and resources to name a few. The entire concept of self-directed learning meshes all too well with the invention of the internet. The idea of online learning takes the characteristics of self-directed learning and allows students flexibility in terms of their time and location. Although this seems ideal, users must be self motivated, organized and resourceful. These qualities are a necessity for successful online learning. This form of learning may not work for every individual but on a whole I feel that the idea of self-directed learning and online environments has many benefits to offer. As for me and my outrageously hectic life it is ideal as it offers multiple options for course completion.

Enhancing Online Learning
The increasing popularity of computer and internet use has brought about the development of online classrooms as a teaching aid as well as in some instances, the sole teaching tool. A blog has become an essential tool used in online learning and education. There are a number of uses for a blog that will enhance an online experience for the learner. Since a blog is a published composition of writings, known as posts, it can give a student a sense of pride and ownership for their work. When they take pride in their work it will generally motivate them to put an extra effort into their subsequent assignments. In addition, I feel that the use of blogs allows children and adults alike the opportunity to perfect their reading and writing skills. A blog also permits the teacher to maintain communication with a class and their parents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is possible as you may access a blog from any internet ready computer. The use of a blog enables teachers to update parents and students on assignments, exams, school notices and any changes to regular classroom expectations. It is a valuable tool for use with long term assignments. Teachers are able to post guidelines and break down the assignments for parents to ensure their child’s success. Communication outside of the schoolhouse allows students and parents to discuss topics and ask questions away from the regular classroom setting. This may encourage an environment that is more inviting for students who are not comfortable providing input or asking questions in regular classroom discussions. These attributes are some of the potentially many uses of a blog in enhancing online learning and education.

A Bit About Me
My name is Lauren Kurio. I am a 24 year old aspiring educator. I grew up in Taber, a small town east of Lethbridge, and now reside in Lethbridge. As a child the majority of my time was spent taking dance classes. After 18 years of dancing, I decided to pass on my knowledge to young boys and girls by teaching classes of my own. I recently made the transition from dance teacher to gymnastics coach and have dedicated my time to incorporating both disciplines into my lessons. As well as teaching and coaching I have been a student at the University of Lethbridge and completed my Bachelor of Science this past year. I am passionate about opening doors and creating opportunities for our younger generation. My hope is that my love for teaching will create an nurturing environment that will allow children's minds to blossom.
